Shearer set for Crewe exit

Shearer arrived at Gresty Road last July following his release from Rotherham but played second fiddle to Ben Garratt and made only four appearances. The 34-year-old joined Burton on loan in January and featured once.

Assistant boss Neil Baker told the club’s official website: “Scott has spoken to the manager and made it known that he wants to carry on playing and would rather do that than the coaching side of things.

“He didn’t play much for us when he was here. He started the season in the team, but then found it difficult to dislodge Ben (Garratt) from the team.

“He expressed an interest to go out on loan in January and that was a risk for us to let him go to Burton. That was the right thing for Scott but probably not the right thing for us at that moment.

“He didn’t play a great deal of football for us nor Burton, so Steve has told him to go out and see what is available for him.

“If something materialises for him then we have a decision to make. We will have to bring in another goalkeeper either an experienced one or a younger one and employ a goalkeeping coach.”
