Sheridan ready for play-offs

Even allowing for the absence of key duo Reuben Reid, Argyle’s top scorer, and the influential Lewis Alessandra, Plymouth delivered a fine display to become only the second side this season to pick up three points at the Greenhous Meadow.

First-half goals from Bobby Reid and Kelvin Mellor wrapped up the points, with Sheridan now looking forward to the chance to go up via the play-offs.

“It will be a tough game,” said Sheridan, on facing a Wycombe side which finished 13 points above them in the table. “It didn’t matter who we were playing, I’m expecting a tough game.

“We’ll prepare properly all week for what’s going to be a good atmosphere, a full house. We’re at home first so we would like to go into the game and try and get an advantage.”

Sheridan agreed his side could not be going into the play-offs on the back of a more impressive performance after toppling a Shrewsbury side who had started the day hoping to pip Burton to the title.

“Coming up against a team who were going for the title, I thought we were top drawer from the first whistle,” added the Plymouth boss. “I thought our first-half performance was really, really good.

“We created chances and caught them on the break. Our work ethic was very good and it suited us a little bit because they played the same system as us.”

Shrewsbury, having made sure of promotion with victory at Cheltenham a week earlier, were unable to hit the same heights this time.

They rallied in the second half and both Ryan Woods and Bobby Grant forced saves from Luke McCormick, but Argyle deserved their victory.

Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon was quick to extend his congratulations to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Burton on being crowned champions.

“Every congratulation to Burton,” he said. “They were very worthy winners, relentless to the end, and congratulations to Jimmy Floyd and his players.

“We weren’t quite good enough towards the end and finished runners-up which is still a fantastic effort from the lads so we’re delighted.”

Shrewsbury supporters poured on to the pitch at the full time whistle to celebrate the club’s promotion.

“It’s huge because this is a League One club, there’s no doubt about that,” said Mellon. “It deserves to be in League One and now the job is to work as hard as possible to make sure that we go in there and are very, very competitive.”

As for his side’s efforts over the last nine months, Mellon added: “It’s been a good season for the length of it. We’ve had some fantastic results and the boys have been consistent, always bouncing back from defeats and putting winning sequences together.”
