Chris Smalling: Man Utd confidence soaring

Chris Smalling has said Manchester United cannot wait to face Liverpool on Sunday as confidence is at an all-time high.

The defender featured in the Red Devils’ ninth consecutive win under Jose Mourinho when goals from Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini gave United a commanding position in their League Cup semi-final tie against Hull City.

And now Smalling has revealed that the entire squad are now fully focused on beating their arch-rivals at Old Trafford this weekend.

“Before facing Reading on Saturday we knew that we had three games in three different competitions,” Smalling told MUTV.

“We knew that if we could keep the winning run going then we couldn’t have more confidence going into one of the biggest games of the season.

“Everyone is really up for it and now we can switch our attention to that game. I think we will recover on Wednesday, then we have a good few days to work on the tactics on how to nullify their threats and to really impact our own play to keep this run going.

“We know how important this game is at the top end of that table.”

Mourinho, meanwhile, has called for improvement from both his players and fans, who have been told not to act like they are coming to the theatre on Sunday.
