Stephen Thompson and Adam Mitchell had given the home side an early two-goal lead at Heritage Park, but Italian international Giaccherini pulled a goal back from close range before half-time.

Boss Dick Advocaat then rung the changes at the interval, and Danny Graham soon equalised after 53 minutes.

Goalkeeper Vito Mannone then saved a penalty from Thompson before Connor Wickham gave the Black Cats the lead just after the hour mark.

Giaccherini then netted a superb curling effort into the corner from 20 yards to ensure Sunderland got off to a positive start in their pre-season campaign.
