Sunderland beat Newcastle United 6-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Stadium of Light today.
In a fixtured branded the “secret derby”, the two North East rivals met to give fringe players at both clubs the chance to gain much-needed match fitness, with neither side in FA Cup action this weekend.
And it was the Black Cats who came out as emphatic winners, with Duncan Watmore netting a hat-trick in the 6-0 triumph.
Scottish striker Steven Fletcher scored two in the win, and midfielder Jack Rodwell was also on the scoresheet for Sunderland.
New signing Dame N’Doye got some much-needed minutes for the Black Cats, with the on-loan Trabzonspor striker last playing for his parent club in December.
Steven Taylor, Yoan Gouffran, Jamaal Lascelles, Sylvain Marveaux and Karl Darlow all featured for the Magpies in the defeat.
The friendly win will give Sunderland added confidence having beat their rivals on the past six occasions, a record in the fixture.
Sam Allardyce’s side are currently 19th in the Premier League table, with Newcastle one place above them in 18th.
The two sides meet in the Premier League at St James’ Park on March 20 in a potential relegation clash.
