Swansea sign ‘keeper Nordfeldt

Nordfeldt, who turned 26 on Tuesday and gets married in Sweden on Saturday, has signed a three-year contract after completing a successful medical.

The five-cap Sweden international will compete with Lukasz Fabianski for the goalkeeper’s position at the Liberty Stadium, following the departures of Gerhard Tremmel and David Cornell from the club this summer.

Nordfeldt becomes Garry Monk’s third signing this month, with Ghana forward Andre Ayew and left-back Franck Tabanou having bolstered the squad following their moves from Marseille and St Etienne respectively.

Nordfeldt started his career with Brommapojkarna, for whom he made more than 100 appearances in both the Swedish top flight and second tier.

His impressive performances caught the attention of several clubs around Europe, with Nordfeldt joining Dutch top-flight club Heerenveen in 2012, although he also held talks with Liverpool at the time.

He featured more than 100 times for Heerenveen, helping them reach the Eredivisie play-offs for Europa League qualification in each of his three seasons at the club – last term he had the second highest save ratio for shots from inside the box in the league.

“I am really happy to be here at Swansea – this is the perfect birthday gift for me!,” he said after taking a quick look around the club’s training ground as well as the Liberty Stadium.

Following his wedding at the weekend, he will fly back to Wales to join his new team-mates for the start of pre-season training on Monday.

“I think this is the right step for me to take from the Dutch Eredivisie to Swansea in the Premier League.

“The Dutch way of playing football is about possession play and it all begins with the goalkeeper. That’s something I’m comfortable with, but I’m also hoping to improve on that here.

“First of all I want to improve myself and help the squad and club move forward. That’s my main goal.”

Nordfeldt added his move to the Swans was fuelled by one significant factor.

“The Premier League is a great league, but what attracted me most was the vision of the club and everyone who works here is really warm and welcoming. That was the main reason for me joining Swansea,” he said.

“Swansea as a club is a like a big family, and the ambitions of the club fits with my own ambitions.”

Swansea open the next Premier League season with a game at Stamford Bridge against champions Chelsea on Saturday August 8.
