Tim Cahill: Celebrating his goal for Australia

Millwall have signed Australia international Tim Cahill 14 years after their former favourite left the New Den to join Premier League Everton.

Cahill, now 38, who scored 57 goals in 251 appearances for the Lions between 1998 and 2004, has signed a deal until the end of the season.

Cahill told Millwall’s official website: “It’s hard to put into words (what it feels like to wear a Millwall shirt again) – I’m still taking it in now.

“The first thing I wanted to do with Neil (Harris) was to walk on the pitch and in the tunnel and have that feeling again that brings back so many memories.

“Once you go over that white line, you get a nervous sensation back that I had when I was a 16-year-old when I first signed here.”

Cahill left Everton to join New York Red Bulls in 2012 and went on to have a spell in China before returning to Australia to join Melbourne City in 2016.

While his move back to England is made with one eye on preparing for this summer’s World Cup, Harris said he expected Cahill’s arrival to have a galvanising effect on the squad.

Harris said: “The players will thrive off the enthusiasm that he brings. When I played with him, I appreciated what he did. Since then, I’ve followed his career and admired what he has done and I know full well what he can bring to my dressing room.”
