SHAY GIVEN: Spilled Antonio Cassano’s first-half shot and might have done better on the opening goal, but repaired some of the damage with good second-half saves from Cassano and Antonio Di Natale. 6

JOHN O’SHEA: Had his hands full with overlapping full-back Federico Balzaretti and was beaten by Mario Balotelli for the second goal. 6

SEAN ST LEDGER: Kept Italy at bay almost single-handed at one point in the game with a series of blocks and a goal-line clearance. 8

STEPHEN WARD: Found himself repeatedly having to deal with Cassano as he drifted wide and struggled to contain him. 6

DAMIEN DUFF: Tried hard to provide an outlet down the right as he marked his 100th cap by captaining the side and enjoyed some success. 7

GLENN WHELAN: His misplaced pass led to the pressure which finally resulted in the opening goal, but battled hard in the middle of the park. 6

KEITH ANDREWS: Once again worked tirelessly to both protect the back four and link with the men ahead of him and very nearly snatched an equaliser before being sent off for a second bookable offence at the death. 6

AIDEN MCGEADY: Turned in an excellent first-half display as the Republic gave as good as they got for long periods, but faded as the game wore on and was substituted. 7

ROBBIE KEANE: Worked tirelessly throughout, but rarely had a sight of goal. 6

KEVIN DOYLE: Marked his return to the team with a bustling performance to stretch the Italian defence. 7
