The penalty awarded to Sunderland and red card shown to Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini split Twitter on Sunday afternoon.
Having dominated the first half at the Stadium of Light, Newcastle were dealt a sucker punch in stoppage time when Coloccini was penalised for a shoulder barge on Steven Fletcher in the penalty area.
Referee Bobby Madley’s decision to award both a spot-kick and red card to Coloccini got plenty of people talking during the half-time interval…
Genuinely think I’ve seen John Terry do that ‘easing striker off the ball with shoulder’ thing about a hundred times without punishment.

Coloccini is an absolute liability these days 🔴 #tata

The law is an ass. A penalty but the red is just stupid. Would be a yellow anywhere else on pitch.

Don’t think there was any need for Coloccini to make the challenge. It was Elliot’s ball all day long.

The more replays I see, the less sure about red card I am. Convinced it was a penalty mind. And also that Elliot should have done better.

No need for Collocini to make the challenge BrainDead defending That was the only kick they had in the 1st half, the penalty

I agree with everyone saying not a pen but why even do that? Coloccini been a liability for months. ‘Not the sharpest tool in the box’
— Timothy Poole (@TimPooleSport) October 25, 2015
That was never a red card, Fletcher wasn’t getting to the ball. Might have been a foul but refs always so keen to get the red out.

Football eh? Madness from Coloccini but don’t think it was a red. Keeper was always getting there.
— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 25, 2015
In a month of Sundays, that’s never a red card/penalty.

Anyone else think that was harsh? Not exactly a barge. Shoulder to shoulder #gameruined

Not sure about that decision but Coloccini is dreadful. Don’t understand why he doesn’t get more criticism – makes so, so many awful errors
— Michael Cox (@Zonal_Marking) October 25, 2015
What an awful decision from the referee. Firstly to give penalty and then red. Poor decision.

Not a penalty and certainly not a sending off in my opinion.
