Some of Manchester United’s playing staff want Wayne Rooney to be given another chance to prove himself as the club’s primary striker, according to reports.
The England captain has taken a lot of flak this season from pundits and has been dropped to the bench in recent weeks after a string of average performances.
The Red Devils bounced back from their humiliating 4-0 defeat to Chelsea with a 1-0 victory over a second string Manchester City side on Wednesday night but their performance was still seen as below par by many observers.
Dropping Rooney – who has missed the last couple of matches through injury – had been seen as the key to resolving a lot of their issues but United have largely been disappointing without the 31-year-old in the side.
The Daily Mail claims that several members of the first-team squad at Old Trafford want Rooney to be given a chance to prove his worth as the club’s No.1 striking option.
His team-mates still believe he can have a huge impact in a number 9 role with Mourinho only using him as an attacking midfielder so far this campaign.
The search for goals has become more desperate for United in recent weeks, with summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic struggling to find the back of the net after scoring four goals in his first four games for the club.
