Guillermo Varela: Takes pride in playing for United

Guillermo Varela: Heading to Germany for a year

Guillermo Varela has vowed to fight for a regular shirt at Manchester United after admitting his frustration at seeing a loan move to Genoa blocked by Louis van Gaal.

The Uruguayan full-back has hardly had a look in at Old Trafford this season and was all set for a temporary switch to Serie A.

However, in light of an injury crisis in United’s defence, Van Gaal pulled the plug and the 22-year-old started the win at Derby on Friday and was an unused substitute in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Stoke.

Varela is highly-rated by assistant boss Ryan Giggs and could be offered an improved deal by United.

However the chance to go and play regularly in Italy for a few months appealed to him as he told El Pais: “At my age it’s so important to play more minutes.

“But I’m also aware that its important and a good thing if your coach wants you to stay and counts on me.”

United currently have Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia all sidelined with injury.
