Villa rally to keep~Euro race alive

Ashley Young’s free-kick that hit the crossbar was the closest either side came during a tentative first half on Merseyside, but the game did not spark into life until after the interval.

Phil Neville’s 25-yard effort deflected off Martin Laursen and past a stranded Scott Carson to put the Toffees ahead in the 56th minute and it looked as though that goal might be enough.

However Villa equalised 10 minutes from time when Gabriel Agbonlahor finished well from Gareth Barry’s corner but Joseph Yobo volleyed home Lee Carsley’s pinpoint cross four minutes later to put the hosts back in front.

However John Carew headed in a Barry cross less than 30 seconds later to earn his side a share of the spoils.
