Aston Villa have instructed their scouts to find ‘potential cheap new recruits who know the Championship’, according to reports on Wednesday.
Despite public proclamations suggesting otherwise from Villa boss Remi Garde, it seems the club – who haven’t won since the first day of the season – have accepted that this season will end in relegation.
The Daily Mirror claim that Villa ‘are now targeting experienced, proven players at Championship level who will be Bosmans in the summer or are coming to the end of their contracts’, with many of last summer’s recruits presumably being sold after their terrible first season.
Of the current Villa squad, Joe Bennett, Scott Sinclair, Ashley Westwood, Joleon Lescott, Gary Gardner and Rudy Gestede all have Championship experience.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that Villa will pay off Charles N’Zogbia, with the Frenchman likely to move to the MLS.
