The enduring image from this encounter will always be Gerrard getting intimate with the Sky Sports camera after slotting a penalty past Edwin van der Sar to put Liverpool 2-1 up.

The thrashing came somewhat out of the blue. Rafael Benitez’s side had slipped to third in the table, seven points behind leaders United, who also had a game in hand. Benitez had also lost his four previous Premier League visits to Old Trafford.

Things looked ominous when Cristiano Ronaldo put United ahead from the spot, but Fernando Torres mugged Nemanja Vidic to equalise, before Gerrard copped off with the camera.

United made a triple substitution with 17 minutes remaining as Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov were sent on in search of an equaliser, but instead, Liverpool gained the upper hand when Vidic was red carded. Fabio Aurelio dispatched the resulting free-kick before Andrea Dossena rubbed salt in United’s wounds in added time.
