Quique Sanchez Flores: Watford contract talks on hold for now

Quique Sanchez Flores insists he is “completely happy at Watford” amid reports he is being lined up by both Valencia and the Spanish national team.

There is speculation over Vicente del Bosque’s future as Spain coach beyond this summer’s European Championship and Flores is among the names mooted to replace him after stabilising Watford in the Premier League.

But former Valencia and Atletico Madrid boss Flores, who has also been linked with a return to Los Che following Gary Neville’s sacking on Wednesday, is eager to remain in England for the time being.

Flores said: “I am completely happy in Watford, I love the fans of Watford and I am really happy with every person who is working for Watford. We are a family and I can say I am happy.

“It is normal. Vicente may decide to depart after an amazing time and people are trying to find names. It is good that they think I am good enough to be considered in Spain but I belong to Watford.

“Today Watford, tomorrow Watford, and for the future Watford. I do not want to consider anything now that is not Watford.”

Watford, promoted last year, seem certain for a second season in the top flight as they sit 11 points clear of the bottom three with eight fixtures left.

But Flores does not want his players to become complacent in the upcoming games.

He said: “I want to think that we are not safe because it is our ambition to win every single game.

“This should be the team’s ambition. At the moment they maybe have the feeling they are in stand-by because it is the last month and we are in a comfortable position and I do not like that.

“We need to recuperate our energy, the energy we usually have. It is not my mentality, we fight. The league is our first objective. The most important thing is to focus on the next matches.”

Flores is downbeat about keeping on-loan Chelsea defender Nathan Ake at Vicarage Road beyond the end of the campaign.

Ake, who has played 23 times for Watford this season, has been very open about his desire to prove himself with the Blues.

Flores added: “Ake is young and he is making a very good impression as a player.

“Of course he wants to (go back) to try and show himself at Chelsea. It is natural he wants that but what happens in the next three months it is impossible to know that.”
