David Luiz says there is a lot of football left to be played and warned Tottenham that Chelsea are “top of the league for a reason”.
The Blues’ lead at the top of the Premier League was cut to just four points after defeat at Manchester United, combined with Spurs home win over Bournemouth.
The two sides meet in the FA Cup semi-final this weekend with Spurs in the midst of a fantastic run which has seen them win their last seven league games.
Luiz though is not about to surrender the title to their London rivals and is hoping his team-mates can hold their nerve and bounce back from the defeat at Old Trafford.
“We lost because we did not play very well and it was not the Chelsea like before and sometimes this happens,” said Luiz, who has made 28 Premier League appearances this season.
“We didn’t play well, Manchester United played better than us and they deserved to win.
“Tottenham are playing very well but also we are top of the table for a reason. We still have to play a lot of football, so we need to look forward and play the next games.”
Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for United, but in the build-up Ander Herrera appeared to control the ball with his hand, an incident which was missed by the referee.
Luiz though has refused to blame the man in the middle for the 2-0 defeat.
“I saw it but we can say the referee did not see it, and they played a counter-attack with the free ball and behind the line you cannot make a foul or you will get a red card,” added the Brazilian.
“It is normal that sometimes the referee can see and sometimes he cannot see so we cannot judge him because also we had some mistakes in the game.
“It is not about the referee why we did not win, it is about our game not being top level.”
