Danny Welbeck: On the comeback trail with Arsenal

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck will be “out for a period of months” after booking in for knee surgery last week.

The Arsenal Supporters Trust has already urged the club to “open a full review into its arrangements for scouting and purchasing players” after Arsene Wenger failed to add a single outfield player to his squad before the end of the transfer window on Tuesday.

Now it has emerged Arsenal did not sign a new striker despite deciding last week that Welbeck would have to go under the knife to correct his knee problem.

‘Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on his left knee after being unable to sufficiently step up his rehabilitation work,’ read a statement on Arsenal’s official website.

‘The striker has been working throughout the summer to recover from the injury sustained at the end of April.

‘It had been hoped he would avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as well as hoped and the decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery by a leading specialist in the field.

‘Danny is now expected to be out for a period of months and everyone at Arsenal wishes him well.’
