Arsene Wenger: Support wavering

Arsene Wenger hailed Arsenal’s dominant display against Southampton and defended the decision to make nine changes at St Mary’s.

The Gunners strolled to a 5-0 victory with Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck getting very high marks for their efforts in a fluid Arsenal attack.

Wenger, who was serving the first game of his four-match ban, was delighted with what he so from afar, before singling out Welbeck for special praise and insisting that he does not make changes for the sake of it.

“I think it was good to watch because we had a good game and were very dangerous. We were in control, very explosive,” Wenger told BT Sport.

“Danny Welbeck was very sharp because he has been working very hard. He comes back from a long way out and has gone through some very difficult moments mentally.

“But his resilience was absolutely marvellous and he was rewarded tonight, so we are happy.

“People say I make changes but I bring in Walcott, Welbeck and Perez, all top quality players.

“After that I try to find the best balance for the team.”
