Arsene Wenger will reportedly make Mesut Ozil Arsenal’s first £200,000-a-week player this summer.
The Mirror claim that Wenger is “confident” Ozil will sign a new contract in the next few months.
The 27-year-old midfield playmaker has got two years left on his current £140,000-a-week deal, which already makes him the best-paid man in the squad.
Ozil claimed last month that he was is in “no hurry” to sign a new contract with talks to extend his current deal reported to have been ongoing for several months.
“There’s no hurry,” he told German news agency Sport-Informations-Dienst in April. “I have two years left on my contract. We’ll see how it goes at the end of the season.”
His new deal, with add-ons and bonuses will go through the £200k-a-week barrier and signal club’s intention to up their ante as they bid to make a concerted attempt to win the Premier League title.
The club and Ozil’s representatives are close to agreeing terms on the contract, which is believed to have heavily incentivised with appearance, goal and success bonuses written into it.
Ozil, who signed for £42.5million from Real Madrid in September 2013, is the club’s record signing and has scored six times and made 18 assists in the league this season.
The Germany star was linked with an unlikely move to Premier League rivals Manchester United earlier this week, according to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb.
