Alex Iwobi: In talks over new Arsenal contract

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Arsenal are in talks with Alex Iwobi over a new contract following his breakthrough into the first team.

Iwobi made it two goals in two Premier League starts last weekend against Watford and is set to be rewarded with an improved deal at Emirates Stadium.

“We are discussing it at the moment, to extend,” Wenger said.

“I think he is a real Arsenal person. He has been here since the age of eight.

“He has three years left at the end of the season, but we want to keep him here for longer.

“There are lots of positives in the last few months about how quickly he emerged as being a player with a good impact.”

Iwobi played for England at age-group level but has since played for Nigeria. He could represent the Super Eagles at August’s Olympics, delaying his return to Arsenal.

Wenger added: “There’s a possibility he will go to the Olympic Games and the African Nations Cup and travel a bit more. We have to respect his choice.”
