Wenger: Determined Arsenal could have won it

Arsene Wenger hailed his Arsenal players after they held champions Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge, but believe they should’ve had more.

The Gunners recovered from their beating at Liverpool last time out away from home in the Premier League to put in a spirited display, and even had the ball in the Chelsea net 15 minutes from time only to be be denied – correctly – by the linesman’s flag.

However, Wenger was satisfied to take something from the game, and he insists it speaks well of his players’ character.

“It was about mentality and a response from our last away game,” Wenger said after the final whistle. “We could have won it.

“It was an intense game. The battle was total.

“We are not in a transfer period and on the day we played Liverpool that affected us. We are all human beings.

“If you play 55 games a season you can have a bad performance.

“But we were focused and determined.

“We tried to play when we had the ball and we were close to winning the game. With a bit more freedom we would have won the game.”
