Wenger likens Manchester derby bust-up to sumo wrestling

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had an interesting analogy when asked his thoughts on the Manchester derby dressing-room bust-up.

It is reported that Manchester City went into their dressing room to celebrate Sunday’s their Old Trafford win rather vociferously.

City’s celebrations, which are said to have involved chanting, screaming and selfies, then reportedly prompted United boss Jose Mourinho to enter their dressing room to tell them in no uncertain terms to ‘tone it down’.

However, it’s then alleged the United manager was showered in milk and water.

The Football Association has given both clubs until Wednesday to reply to a request for observations following the reports.

When asked his thoughts on the bust-up, which also saw former Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta suffer a cut, Wenger said: “It is part of the intensity. It can go overboard. It happened to us. It happened to us. Hopefully you commit 100% to the pitch and are an angel after.

“I don’t know what happened really. It is difficult to take to see the 100 per cent celebration on the other side. It is an experience that’s a little bit offensive.

“That’s why I admired sumo in Japan because the guy who wins does not show his happiness out his respect for his opponent.

“Is it something we can copy? I don’t think so. It’s not part of our culture.”
