Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has been in bed for 18 days after struggling to recover from a chest infection, according to Arsene Wenger.
The German centre-back, who was involved in a minor road traffic accident on Monday, has missed the last month of action and is not fit enough to face Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
“With Mertesacker, it was a serious condition and he is not ready today to play,” said Wenger. “He was in bed for 18 days. He is training and I believe by the end of the week he should be much better.”
Meanwhile, Mertesacker, who could return for Arsenal’s clash with Chelsea this weekend, was reportedly left shaken after losing control of his car in the rain on the M1 on Monday.
It is understood that only Mertesacker was involved in the incident, with the car aquaplaning into the central reservation.
