Wenger refuses to explain Alexis Sanchez’s Arsenal omission

Arsene Wenger has refused to explain why he named Alexis Sanchez on the bench for tonight’s League Cup semi-final with Chelsea.

Wenger admitted he could leave the Chile star out of his line-up at his news conference on Teesday and he did exactly that tonight, with Theo Walcott also benched again.

Sanchez has been heavily linked with a move to Man City with reports suggesting Pep Guardiola will finalise the transfer this month.

City star Kevin de Bruyne also spoke about Sanchez, and according to his latest interview it appears to be a case of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ Sanchez joins.

“He’s a very good player,” he told reporters.

“Obviously we will see what happens in this transfer period.

“We are in a good period already, the whole season. Everybody is doing a good job. When he comes he will add something to the team.”

But when quizzed on tonight’s decision, Wenger gave little away.

He told Sky Sports: “You cannot explain every single decision, that is the decision of today.”

Wenger was then asked, if he was needed would he bring Sanchez on?

“Of course,” said Wenger. “He is completely focused. He is ready to come on and play a part.”
