Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Monaco starlet Kylian Mbappe, claiming to know the striker “very well”.
Mbappe, 18, who broke Thierry Henry’s record to become the youngest-ever goalscorer for Monaco, has continued his impressive start to his career with six goals and seven assists so far this season.
A whole host of top European clubs are said to be chasing the signature of one of the brightest striking prospects in France, and Wenger confirmed that Arsenal were one of them.
“Yes, we follow him and we know him very well and he is developing well,” Wenger told the Ligue 1 show.
“He extended his contract last season so it’s Monaco who will decide about his future.”
Mbappe has draw obvious comparisons to Arsenal legend Henry, but Wenger was cautiously optimistic about whether the young Monaco striker can reach the same level.
“Mbappe is not exactly Thierry Henry but it’s true that he has similar qualities,” Wenger added.
“The future, the talent is similar. The potential is similar. After that, does he have the same level of motivation, desire and intelligence that Thierry had? The next two or three years will tell us that.”
