Arsene Wenger: Looking for quality, not quantity this summer

Arsene Wenger: Tough decisions ahead of Liverpool game

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed he is targeting three summer additions to his squad as he begins making plans for next season.

The Gunners rounded off a typically inconsistent campaign by beating Aston Villa 4-0 to finish second in the Premier League ahead of rivals Tottenham, who were demolished 5-1 at Newcastle on the final day.

Wenger has already been strongly linked with moves for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Zhaka and Serie A strike pair Alvaro Morata and Mauro Icardi, and reports from France have claimed that Leicester enforcer N’Golo Kante is also on Arsenal’s radar.

However, Wenger insists he is not targeting radical changes this summer, insisting that it’s all about finding the right balance between what he has and what he feels he needs.

“We want to keep the squad stable over the summer while strengthening where possible,” he told reporters. “You want the group to be stimulated and to believe that we have improved the quality.

“I must say, we want to combine technical stability with players that we know want to play and know our game. Maybe bring in three players for example. That’s the right level for me.”

Wenger will create room for his new additions by allowing out-of-contract veterans Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicki and Mathieu Flamini to leave the club, with club captain Arteta admitting disappointment at failing to deliver a Premier League title during his time in North London.

“Our ambition this season was to win the Premier League and we’re so disappointed that we came short with that aim, because it’s not good enough for this club,” the Spaniard wrote in his final programme notes on Sunday.

“Winning two FA Cups in a row was special but for me, it’s not enough for a club like this. It shouldn’t be the ambition.

“Hopefully the new generation will be better than us and will become fantastic leaders and heroes here.”
