Arsene Wenger thinks Arsenal will make “at least one” new signing this month, dropping a strong hint that a midfielder is his top priority.
Arsenal moved two points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, but Wenger admitted that his players suffered from ‘heavy legs’ and were not at their best.
FC Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny is expected to join in the January transfer window, but when asked about whether to expect any upcoming signings, Wenger said: “Imminent, no, but we will look.”
However, the Frenchman later told Sky Sports that he did expect to add at least one new player to his squad this month.
“Ideally, I would like first our injuries to come back. After that, I think at least one [new signing],” Wenger said.
“We have still players with a lack of experience in midfield, like [Calum] Chambers, [Alex] Iwobi, [Jeff] Reine-Adelaide, [Joseph] Willock. They can all play, but at the moment, because there is so much at stake, it is very difficult to get the young players to start, but they have the quality.”
