Wilson plays down Hoops link

The former Rangers and Liverpool defender has played a starring role in the Jambos title success this year and Celtic manager Ronny Deila admitted last week the 23-year-old was ‘on his radar’.

Deila could be looking for two new centre backs next season with Virgil van Dijk linked with a move to the Premier League and Jason Denayer’s year-long loan deal from Manchester City coming to an end.

Celtic have already sounded out Nantes defender Papy Djilobodjiat but the reported £5m price tag could force them to look closer to home, a market Deila is keen to tap further after his double acquisition in the January transfer window.

The Norwegian made good on his promise to bring in Scottish talent when recruiting Dundee United duo Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven at the start of the year and Wilson fits the remit of his rebuilding project.

But in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports’ David Tanner, Wilson, who joined Liverpool from Rangers in a £2m deal in the summer of 2010, refused to look too much into Deila’s ‘radar’ comment.

“I think he was maybe just being polite,” he said. “I don’t think he really said too much regarding myself and I don’t know if it will come to anything.

“I’m not really looking for something like that at the moment. It’s just something that has been said in the oress. I’m sure there will be hundreds of stories over the summer of every player that we’ve got so it’s not something I’m focused on just now. I’ve got to finish the season here and then we’ll see what happens.”

Asked if having played for Rangers would have a bearing on any potential move to the Hoops, Wilson said: “I think you’ve got to be open to anything in your career.

“But like I say, right now I’m just focused on Hearts and finishing the season strongly here. We’ll see what happens in the future but you never know.

“I expect to be here next season. I’ve not made any other plans regarding that so I’m not looking beyond the season, I’m not looking beyond the next game. Whatever happens in the summer will happen.”
