Granit Xhaka: Chats about Arsenal with Johan Djourou

Granit Xhaka: Chats about Arsenal with Johan Djourou

Our readers discuss how Granit Xhaka already looks an excellent signing for Arsenal, how Man Utd would be getting the better end of the deal in a Nemanja Matic -Matteo Darmian swap and how England will fare against Slovakia on Monday night.

If you have anything to add on any subject, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Join the debate right here.

Xhaka can add steel and guile to Arsenal midfield

I thought Xhaka was magnificent against France. As has been stated on these pages, what I like about him is how he seems to pick the right option – whether it’s the pass or the push into space. And he’s not the most mobile but he’s always moving and making space for himself just to buy that extra yard or second to find the right options.

He just patrols that centre circle when his team is in possession, sees the space behind him and moves in to cover if the CB is out of position… I really, really like him.

On the one hand, he’s not a Krychowiak who is basically straight up muscle in the middle that attacks will just bounce off of – he’s more of a tackler and interceptor as and when. But, on the other hand, I feel that passing ability is most important for a DM in our team because we tend to find ourselves with the ball more often than not. The ability to control things from the back and make those opportunistic passes that bypass multiple men in the midfield.

I take TSO’s point though – I always thought that maybe playing him and Cazorla would be good for the obvious on-ball quality, but I feel he might be best with someone that is good on the ball, defensively decent, reads space well especially forward, can carry the ball but, most importantly, has enough engine and mobility for both of them. And, as you say, Kante is really looking like an option to salivate about!

BUT… out of the midfielders we have, who’s the best potential partner for Xhaka? As I said in a previous post, if we don’t get a new winger, I wouldn’t be averse to trying Cazorla on the left, with Sanchez on the right. Which leaves El-Neny, Coquelin, Ramsey and Wilshere to choose from.

And, considering the above criteria… I’d JUST ABOUT go with Elneny at home and Coquelin away from home or/and in big games. Ramsey has the engine but not the mobility, Wilshere vice versa. Tough pick though!

Darmian – Matic swap fair?

Nemanja Matic struggled to produce the goods on a consistent basis for Chelsea last season, but it’s clear for all to see that he’s one of the most talented defensive midfielders in the division.

I’d be more than happy to have him at Man Utd, so long as the Chelsea choice of players starts and ends with Matteo Darmian. interesting to see if this rumors is true or not

Vardy ‘used Arsenal to get better Leicester deal’

Jamie Vardy: Subject of an offer from Arsenal

Was anyone really shocked to see Jamie Vardy snub Arsenal? I’ve been saying the whole time it was all about getting himself a better deal at Leicester – and I think that’s all it ever was.

That said, he was never the player we need anyway. Don’t get me wrong – he’s better than what we have and would be great for the PL, but Vardy is yet to prove himself in the CL. He’s no Aguero and that’s the type of player we need (without the injury probs though – we’ve got enough crocks of our own).

Thing is, if he stays loyal to Leicester, I’d really admire that. Even on a ‘mere’ £80k pw or whatever he’s on, he’ll still have more than enough to have a very comfortable retirement and sounds like he’s about to get a pay bump anyway.

Banjo, in answer to your question about who would want to play for us, Sol Campbell springs to mind 😉

England expects

I predict a 6-0 thrashing with Kane getting a hat-trick, all assisted by Sterling, Lallana dominating and toying with the Slovaks and Rooney showing everyone that he is the new Pirlo. Roy will of course be hailed a tactical genius and we will go on to win the Euros.

With the Russia v Wales kicking off at the same time on ITV, lots of eyes will be on the outcome of this group.

I think Wales are good enough to Edge past Russia, but more importantly, I’d like us to ensure we try and win this so that we finish the group top and be able to play our second round game on a Saturday, 5pm against 3rd place A,C, or D.

Let’s hope we can lift off from the triumph last Thursday.

England line up…..?

Clyne Smalling Cahill Bertrand
Henderson Wilshere Lallana
Vardy Sturridge

You heard it here first

Personally i would give Kane one more chance (maybe bias) and let him play alongside sturridge. sterling being on the pitch didn’t help anyone. no denying kane has been poor but he had zero service. the whole dynamic of the team changed when sterling went off, but unfortunately do did Kane.

Possible Man City signings

I thought William Cavalalo would be a good addition. Playing at defensive mid for Portugal had a good game last night but so did all the tv pundits.

ManCity Jim

Alvaro Morata for me if he could play with Sergio. He goes with Nolito too. We desperately need some help for Sergio. The knockout phase will show the better players.

If we sign this Brazilian youngster it could be Jesus crossing the ball to Jesus to head in from a corner! Now that would be a miracle!

Karma comes back to haunt Ronaldo

Portugal’s qualification for the knockout stages looks under threat and the team Ronaldo mocked are currently above them.

From an individual point of view, he has one possibly two more international tournaments left in him.

Most notably in that game, I didn’t see him offer any real assist to any of his fellow team-mates.

It will reflect as Karma, but I dare say the penny will still not drop in the importance of being a team player and thinking objectively.

Pedro sale would not hurt Chelsea

Pedro: Wants a return to Barca

Personally, I don’t think Pedro will get much game time under Conte, he is the one player that I just can’t see fitting in to the speculated system. If that’s the case we may as well let him go and get some cash to spend in other areas.

I think the best thing to do is wait till it all pans out. The press made this whole mess not the player nor Arsenal.

For all we know Vardy may have made little to no interest in joining Arsenal, it was the likes of Giroud who had their opinion on it. At the end of the day of Arsenal really want him, they may have to throw a high amount of money at Leicester to get him.

They are in a good position to keep him, there is no real reason they can’t top four challenge next season or at least get a Europa slot. With Vardy there is always a risk of joining another club and not fitting in, we’ve seen it before. Which potentially could end his career.

I think it’s best to wait and see. If Arsenal offer 50Mil, will they turn it down? I doubt it. Will Arsenal offer that kind of money? Doubtful because that’s not how they do business. Is Vardy worth that amount? well… questionable…

Do I think Vardy used the gunners? I don’t think so.

The only reason why Vardy would move is money, he just won the Premier League and is in the Champions League, reaping the rewards of his commitment to Leicester.

Arsenal could throw some money at both him and Leicester but Vardy is also in a strong position, he can spend another year at Leicester and prove he is no one season wonder. Wind his contract down by another year and by doing that he can ask for a bigger paycheck if he decides to move.

If he wants to make a name for himself, best to stay with Leicester and become a hero there.
If he moved to Arsenal he’d probably get less games, and may well struggle, with new team mates and a different system.

Thing is,this Leicester thing may just be a one off. If he went to Arsenal,he’d get CL football every year, more chance of silverware, though I also agree with others that Arsenal may not suit him and vice versa, due to the style of play. It’s a tough one. The way he’s keeping Leicester and Arsenal guessing at the moment seems a bit off to me. He apparently wants to wait until after the tournament before deciding either way. But Arsenal had their bid accepted before the tournament even started,so he’s clearly had a lot of time to mull things over already. If this was Liverpool,I wouldn’t be happy, and would start considering alternatives. It feels like Vardy is stringing Arsenal along, and may be using their interest to get a better deal from Leicester

A bit hard to let go of Melton Mowbray – they do the best Pukka Pies 😀 😉

Can anyone see Leicester finishing top 6, let alone top half next season?
I think they will lose a couple of players and the quality of the replacements will be key.

Plus with CL football they will need another 5 or 6 real quality players in their squad
