Darren Ferguson said Peterborough had thrown away a glorious chance to win after seeing Jay Rodriguez's late goal steal Burnley a 1-1 draw.

Ferguson's Posh looked destined to claim their first npower Championship win since Boxing Day when Paul Taylor took advantage of a defensive error to score in the 12th minute.

However, after the Clarets saw a penalty claim for handball turned down, Rodriguez took the game by the scruff of the neck and earned a draw with a fine run and finish with three minutes left.

And while a draw at least stopped a run of four successive defeats in all competitions, Ferguson insisted Peterborough should have won it.

"We were in such control in the first half, but we were so careless in the last third. The game should have been over before half-time," he said.

"When you're on top, especially at this level, you need to take your chances, and we were really careless with the final ball.

"Defensively it was a really poor goal to concede - there's no way he should be scoring from there.

"I lost count of how many times we had spare men in and we tried shots and missed the target, so that was disappointing.

"Our game plan worked really, really well in the first half, but in the second half we just couldn't get out. We had some good defensive headers away but unfortunately we couldn't see it through.

"It would have been a massive three points - any three points is big. But it stops the rot (of three defeats) and it's as well as we've played for a while, and now we've got a nice easy game against West Ham!"

And after seeing Rodriguez rescue his side a point, Burnley assistant manager Jason Tindall claimed his side could have won it had their penalty claims against Mark Little been given.

"At one point we thought we were just not going to score, with the chances we had and didn't take," he said.

"But in the end Jay has come up with a bit of magic and scored a spectacular goal.

"We're pleased we got something from the game, as I believe it would have been tragic if we had come away with nothing.

"Yes I felt it should have been a penalty. If you raise your arms in the 18-yard-box then you're asking for trouble.

"It wouldn't be right to blame the conditions - they were the same for both sides and we are professional enough to be able to adapt to them.

"We were making sloppy, sloppy mistakes that are out of character for us, and that's the main reason why we didn't perform in the first half."
