Northampton have not given up hope of keeping prized midfielder Michael Jacobs - but the club accept it is "very unlikely".

Jacobs, 20, was watched by several clubs this season and the Cobblers have already rejected an offer from a Championship side this summer.

Should he leave without a price being agreed, Northampton would be compensated with a fee set by a tribunal due to his age.

Chairman David Cardoza told the Northampton Chronicle: "I suspect that Michael will not sign his contract and will want to move on. I can understand that because there are some big clubs out there who have already had a couple of offers turned down.

"We are expecting more interest as the summer progresses and we want to get it done as soon as possible.

"We haven't given up hope of him staying but at the same time we accept it is very unlikely that he will stay."
