Port Vale are hoping to get the go-ahead to sign a player ahead of their League Two trip to Southend on Saturday afternoon.
Injuries and suspensions mean Vale, who are still in administration and under a transfer embargo, are likely to have just 15 first-team players available at Roots Hall this weekend.
Manager Micky Adams has revealed that the club's administrators have spoken to the Football League about getting special dispensation to bring in a player on loan.
He told Vale's official website: "From the 18 in the squad the other night, we have lost three of them. We have lost Doug Loft, Darren Murphy and Sam Morsy, so we're down to 15.
"Richard Duffy is back on the training ground but he is still some way off fitness, so it may be a case where we have to take him along with us.
"We are speaking to the Football League and when we have got something to announce, we will announce it. The Administrator has been in and he has spoken to the Football League so we will see what we can do. If we can bring another body in before Saturday, then we will try our best to do so."
