Micky Adams hailed Tom Pope after he became the fastest Port Vale player in the club's history to score 20 goals in a season.
Pope bagged a hat-trick in Tuesday night's 4-0 home win over Bristol Rovers in League Two to eclipse Wilf Kirkham's 86-year-old record by a single day, with his achievement coming just hours after the Alchemy Investment Group were handed the keys to Vale Park.
Adams said: "Wilf must have been one hell of a player and Tom has shown he is as good as anyone in the league at this moment in time.
"He deserves all the plaudits he is going to get because he is working very hard for the team and he's reaping the rewards.
"Long may it continue because what he can't do is rest on his laurels. There is still a lot of hard work for us all to do.
"We took some criticism on Saturday after failing to beat York, but I wasn't worried and the boys have reacted magnificently. They showed a desire and determination to do well and I couldn't be more pleased with them."
