Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas and his Manchester United counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson were both critical of the officials after a 3-3 draw.

Chelsea were in full control when Jonny Evans' first-half own goal was followed by goals from Juan Mata and David Luiz shortly after the break.

But United were handed a lifeline by referee Howard Webb as he awarded a pair of penalties which Wayne Rooney converted before substitute Javier Hernandez headed in a late equaliser.

Afterwards, Villas-Boas criticised Webb for making some "strange decisions".

"Of course, it's not easy to take," he said. "It's a massive recovery for United. We had it in our hands and let it slip.

"There were some strange decisions today though. These things just keep happening. The first one is a penalty and I agree with it. The second is very unlucky.

"I'm not sure if Howard is trying to compensate for something."

Ferguson disagreed with Villas-Boas and claimed his side should have been given another two spot-kicks.

"We had two penalties in the second half which were justified. I think we could have had four penalties," said the Scot, who also complained that Blues debutant Gary Cahill should have been sent off for hauling down Danny Welbeck after 10 minutes.

"It's a sending off. I don't blame Howard Webb, I blame the assistant. I can't understand that."

Despite his grievances Ferguson reflected on a memorable recovery, although he agreed it still represented dropped points.

"It is two points dropped, but we played so well apart from the 10 mins after half-time," he said on Sky Sports 1.

"It's not easy coming back from 3-0 down. That's a massive effort."

Despite the comeback, Rooney was disappointed to lose ground on Manchester City in the title race.

"It's two points lost," Rooney told Sky Sports 1.

"We understand that, but after being 3-0 down - the City players at home must have liked that - we enjoyed the way we fought back.

"A lot of teams might have put their heads down and accepted defeat, but we never put our heads down."

Rooney claimed he did not see the penalties, but was confident of converting both.

"The two (penalties) we got I'm not sure. Thankfully the referee gave them," he said.

"I was always confident. I waited for the keeper to make his move and put it the other way."
