Preston legend Graham Alexander hopes to secure a role on the club's backroom staff soon.
The 40-year-old, who made more than 350 appearances in two stints at Deepdale, brought the curtain down on a 21-year playing career last month and is keen to begin his coaching career with the League One side.
Alexander has already tasted life in the bootroom, having acted as joint-caretaker manager alongside David Unsworth prior to Graham Westley's arrival in January.
He is due to hold talks with Preston chairman Peter Ridsdale and hopes a position opens up for him.
He told the Lancashire Evening Post: "The chairman says we will speak soon so hopefully something can get sorted out.
"I'm at that stage where it still sounds a little bit strange when people talk about me being retired, but it's something which all footballers have to go through, and I'm just looking towards the next challenge."
