A Jamie Cureton goal eight minutes from time salvaged a point for Exeter after Karl Duguid had opened the scoring after eight minutes for the U's.
But the visitors had plenty of chances to extend their advantage, and Ward was frustrated that they were not taken.
"It is disappointing really because that should have been a blot on a three or four-goal win because we had enough opportunities to score and have the game put to bed," he said. "It should have been a statistic that goal. But it means a point for both teams rather than being a nominal figure.
"We have played some very good teams in different circumstances and we have come out pretty well.
"I don't think we tired, that is an easy angle to use. I have been really pleased with the fitness and stamina of the team, it is our ninth game in March and we have only lost one of them and that is a fantastic effort. I can't speak highly enough of their attitude and approach and their fitness levels."
