The Os survived thanks to Wycombe's home defeat to Notts County. It looked as if Slade's side would be going into a final-day decider against Rochdale, but two last-gasp goals at Adams Park changed the picture.
Slade said: "We knew the other scores, the kit man told us at half-time what was happening and the big cheers came from our fans with five minutes to go when Notts County equalised, but we didn't know they had scored again until we got in the changing room.
"That's the way it goes sometimes, but we won't grumble."
He added: "We have to try and sign off with a win. It's been a really tough season from start to finish - probably the toughest I've had for a lot of reasons.
"We will review it soon, we won't leave anything chance and look to improve for next time. Some good things came from this, some really good things, but we can't defend our box, concentration, switching off and second balls."
