Big freeze hits League matches

Friday 03-February-2012 11:36

Fixtures across the Football League this weekend have fallen victim to the weather as the big freeze hits the UK.

Fratton Park - where Pompey were due to host Hull City in the Championship - passed an initial pitch inspection on Friday, but referee Darren Sheldrake returned on Saturday morning and found the surface to be unplayable following freezing temperatures overnight.

Later, the Doncaster v Reading clash in the Championship was also postponed.

In League One, the Charlton v Rochdale and Scunthorpe v Walsall games were called off.

Charlton reported overnight temperatures of minus six on their website, and they called in the referee early to make a decision.

Glanford Park also reached minus six overnight.

And in League Two, Bradford v Crawley at Valley Parade, Northampton v Macclesfield at Sixfields and Swindon v Burton at the County Ground all failed morning pitch inspections.

The League One matches at Bournemouth, Bury, Colchester, Notts County, Oldham and Preston had already been postponed on Friday, along with League Two matches at Aldershot, Cheltenham, Crewe, Oxford, Morecambe, Rotherham and Shrewsbury.

Plymouth Argyle versus Southend will be the only game to go ahead in League Two after Home Park passed a pitch inspection on Saturday morning.

Saturday's postponements:

Championship: Doncaster v Reading, Portsmouth v Hull.

League One: Bournemouth v Exeter (re-scheduled for Tuesday, February 7), Bury v Hartlepool, Charlton v Rochdale, Colchester v Sheffield United, Notts County v Stevenage, Oldham v Leyton Orient, Preston North End v Brentford, Scunthorpe v Walsall.

League Two: Aldershot v Bristol Rovers, Bradford v Crawley, Cheltenham v AFC Wimbledon, Crewe v Accrington, Gillingham v Hereford, Oxford v Barnet, Morecambe v Dagenham and Redbridge, Northampton v Macclesfield, Rotherham v Torquay, Shrewsbury v Port Vale, Swindon v Burton Albion.
