Barker's men have enjoyed creditable draws against the likes of Charlton and Huddersfield in recent weeks, but Saturday's 4-1 reverse at home to Wycombe made it 11 games without a win ahead of Scunthorpe's visit to Gigg Lane on Tuesday.
The Iron are unbeaten in their last five outings and are level with the Shakers on 41 points.
"They're a fast-improving side who have made signings in the loan window that have affected them," said Barker.
"It's another game against a team in the bottom half of the division. I've said all along that although we've picked up some valuable points from the bigger teams, if we're going to get anywhere then we need to be beating the teams round about us.
"Without looking too far - we can't be concentrating on Tranmere and Preston before we've got this one out of the way - certainly we've got to play teams in the next few weeks who have the same agenda as us."
