After a first half of plenty of endeavour but few goal-scoring chances, Hanson broke the deadlock with a close-range header which appeared to take a deflection off Ben Mills after Craig Fagan's free-kick found him unmarked at the far post. It was Hanson's 14th goal of the season.
Nahki Wells, who scored a hat-trick in Bradford's 3-1 win at Northampton last week, twice went close to scoring before he was booked for an apparent dive after Portuguese keeper Jose Veiga saved at his feet - an incident that also earned Veiga a yellow card.
Substitute Deane Smalley and skipper Ricky Ravenhill also went close to adding to Bradford's lead, Veiga diving at Ravenhill's feet and Smalley seeing his 20-yard shot deflected for a corner in stoppage time.
The visitors put the Bradford defence under pressure at times, but keeper Matt Duke had few direct shots to save.
