St Mirren defender Lee Mair is confident his side can finish in the top six of the SPL - if they find a ruthless streak in front of goal.

Danny Lennon's side dominated the first half of Saturday's 0-0 draw with Motherwell but passed up a series of opportunities.

Mair was one of many culprits and believes St Mirren - currently sitting two points behind sixth-placed Dundee United - are due some luck.

He said: "We lacked a cutting edge. I should have scored with a header from about six yards and scoring goals has been a problem for us.

"Taking chances is the difference between us being in the top six and not. There are only two points separating four or five teams and we need to start taking chances.

"The most important thing is we're not losing games and we are not too far away from turning draws into wins.

"Maybe we need a bit of luck in front of goal. It may take a scrappy goal to get us going and turn things around.

"We've studied the games and we've not been gifted goals. Teams haven't made mistakes against us - we've had to work hard for goals."

The draw kept St Mirren in ninth position and Mair admitted it was probably the right result after Motherwell had the better of the second half.

He said: "It's a good point against a Motherwell team who have been flying.

"It was a typical Scottish game and the tackles were flying in. It was good for the fans but there was nothing nasty in it. It was enjoyable."

Motherwell's Tim Clancy was preferred to club captain Stephen Craigan in central defence and produced a solid performance.

The Irishman has been a shrewd signing by manager Stuart McCall and admitted the Fir Park side were content with a draw.

He said: "We'll take the point and try to win as many games as we can. We're not looking any further than making sure of our top-six place.

"From a neutral's point of view it was a good game and both sets of fans would have gone home happy with how their team played.

"We created the better chances but a draw was a fair result.

"It may have been 0-0 but the fans will go home having enjoyed it as it was end to end and open.

"Both teams played good football and all that was missing was a goal."
