Wycombe v Shrewsbury preview

Marcus Bean could be recalled to Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe side against Shrewsbury after missing the last few weeks.

A persistent knee injury has hampered Bean’s involvement of late, but he returned to the bench in Saturday’s draw at Southend and could be handed a recall.

Max Kretzschmar (groin) is likely to miss out once again, along with the suspended Matt McClure, while Peter Murphy could replace Matt Bloomfield.

A win for Ainsworth’s men would take them above their opponents and into second place, above a Shrewsbury side with just one win in their last four.

Shrewsbury could welcome back Andy Mangan and Liam Lawrence after the duo returned to training this week.

Striker Mangan has been out since January with a knee injury while midfielder Lawrence has missed the last three games with a dead leg and bruising on the bone.

James Wesolowski and Nathaniel Knight-Percival are out for the season following cruciate knee ligament injuries.

They have undergone surgery and have already had a light jogging session.

Wycombe boss Gary Waddock could have Ian Westlake available for the clash with top-of-the-table Shrewsbury.

The 26-year-old midfielder missed three consecutive games but has returned to training from an ankle injury and could make the squad.

Striker Stuart Beavon is pushing for his first start of the season after returning from the broken leg that ended his season prematurely last year.

The former Weymouth striker has appeared as a substitute on two occassions so far and will be hoping for more action against The Shrews.

Jon-Paul Pittman will be out for at least four months after undergoing surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his knee, but Waddock has no fresh injury concerns.

Shrewsbury are likely to rest Lionel Ainsworth in their clash with Wycombe.

The 22-year-old has proved an integral player for the Shrews this season, but missed last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Northampton after picking up a knock in training.

Ainsworth has since returned to training but manager Graham Turner is likely to err on the side of caution by naming him on the bench, with Tuesday’s match against Port Vale in mind.

“Bearing in mind the two games in four days, what we don’t want is for him to play in the game at Wycombe and then be sidelined again for Port Vale,” he said.

“We’ve got to have a good look and an assessment of [the injury] so that it doesn’t jeopardise his ability to stay fit for a number of weeks.”

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury have been boosted by a re-diagnosis of Benjamin van den Broek’s ankle injury.

It had been feared that the Dutch midfielder had fractured an ankle in a reserve match, but a new scan has shown ligament damage, meaning he will be back faster than first thought.
