Blues finally hit the spot

It’s not difficult to pick memorable moments when you support Birmingham City! 130 years of dusting an empty trophy cabinet.

I wish I could regale you with the magical moment when we knew the league/ cup was ours and we celebrated our place in history with a fancy jig.

Instead the finest moment for me in the last decade was a victory over those East Anglian giants, Norwich City. No offence Canaries but not exactly Real Madrid. Mind you we’re not exactly Barcelona!

It was 12 May 2002 and the Blues had edged past Millwall in the play off semi final and the eagerly anticipated local derby against the Villa was just one game away. All that stood between us and sixteen years of exile was Norwich City at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.

My brother Dean and I travelled down early on the morning having nearly missed the kick off against Liverpool a year or so earlier in the Worthington Cup Final at the same ground due to traffic.

We wandered around, mingled, grabbed a beer, some fast food, and then met the rest of the Porter clan who arrived bit by bit. The game was not so memorable.

Inevitable

That footballing ‘Adonis’ Iwan Roberts put Norwich ahead in extra time and it seemed that once again the Blues were going to disappoint. But just nine minutes later Blues legend Geoff Horsfield bundled the ball home and took the game to penalties.

It was at this point we considered going home so notoriously bad are we at penalties. A few years before in a penalty shoot out against Liverpool we actually missed every spot kick!

Roberts scored again, Stern John equalised, Vaesen saved, Devlin scored, Sutch missed, Laziridis scored, Easton scored and so it was up to 18 year old life long Blues fan Darren Carter to have his shot at glory. The boy became a man and drilled home the winning penalty.

The unbridled joy of that moment, shared with sister, mum, dad, brother, son, cousin, best friends, complete strangers, will stay with me forever. The happiness and excitement was incredible. Just for once the Blues had not let us down.
