Swansea City have suffered a blow to their squad with news that Ferrie Bodde may have to end his career following another injury.

The Dutch midfielder has been out of action for three years after he ruptured a cruciate ligament just months into the Swans' 2008 Championship campaign after winning promotion from League One in the summer.

Midfielder Bodde played an influential role as Swansea won the League One title and continued to impress in the Championship before picking up the injury against Birmingham City.

However, having started his recovery and stepped up to play for the club's reserves last week against Arsenal Bodde suffered a further setback with a serious injury to his opposite knee.

"Ferrie Bodde is set to go under the surgeon's scalpel for a third knee operation," a club statement confirmed.

"The Dutchman limped off after just two minutes of Swansea's reserve game against Arsenal last week after stepping up his comeback from a long-standing knee problem that has kept him out for virtually three years.

"While the latest injury is in the other knee, his surgeon has confirmed ligament damage that will require an operation in three to four weeks' time.

"However, the full extent of the injury cannot be fully diagnosed until the swelling has reduced significantly around the knee."

Bodde has returned home to Holland where it is expected he will undergo the surgery but there are fears the 29-year-old will have to call time on his career following this latest injury.
