It's day seven of the 2011-12 TEAMtalk Soccers ceremony, and Sam Nightingale presents the Football League Player of the Season accolade.

The votes came in thick and fast for this category and were eventually whittled down to a shortlist of five. The likes of Southampton stopper Kelvin Davis, Birmingham defender Curtis Davies, West Ham midfielder Mark Noble, Charlton defender Michael Morrison and Shrewsbury's Ian Sharps were all unlucky not to make the top five.

5. Paul Caddis - Swindon:

Swindon right-back Paul Caddis made 50 appearances for the Robins and led from the front in Town's title-winning campaign. The former Celtic player patrolled the right flank as Swindon marched up the League Two table playing an attractive style of football. Caddis was made club captain for the rest of the season after an injury to former skipper Oliver Risser and guided Town over the finishing line as Paolo Di Canio's side bounced back from relegation at the first attempt.

4. Johnnie Jackson - Charlton:

Charlton midfielder and captain Johnnie Jackson proved instrumental for the Addicks as they landed the League One title with an astonishing 101 points. The former Tottenham trainee provided the drive and creativity from midfield essential for any promotion-winning campaign and notched 13 goals. The pressure was on skipper Jackson and manager Chris Powell, especially after such a high turnover of players last summer, when the Addicks boss brought in 19 new faces. But Powell stepped up to the plate and Jackson led by example on the pitch.

3. Ian Harte - Reading:

Reading left-back Ian Harte starred for the Royals as Brian McDermott's men finished top of the Championship.

Harte, 34, may be in the autumn of his career but he is enjoying an Indian summer and the club's promotion to the Premier League gives the former Republic of Ireland defender another shot at the big time. The former Leeds full-back is still a danger from free-kicks and his left foot, like a bottle of fine red wine, is getting better with age.

2. Jordan Rhodes - Huddersfield:

Huddersfield forward Jordan Rhodes has enjoyed a superb season as Town finished fourth in League One before sealing promotion with a sensational 8-7 win over Sheffield United on penalties in the play-off final at Wembley.

Rhodes bagged 40 goals in total, including five in Town's 6-0 demolition of Wycombe back in January. The Terriers frontman, 22, is one of the Football League's hottest properties and has a big future, with Fulham, West Brom and Tottenham all admirers of his unbelievable tekkers.

1. Rickie Lambert - Southampton:

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert hit 31 goals in all competitions during the 2011/12 campaign as Saints earned automatic promotion to the Premier League with a second-placed finish in the Championship.

The big striker, equally adept at scoring from open play and set-pieces, has proved to be the key man for Southampton and his 27 league goals is a remarkable return for a forward playing his first season in the Championship.

Lambert has plied his trade in the lower divisions for most of his career and it is great to see a striker taking his chance and proving he can do it at a higher level. The hitman has fired Southampton to back-to-back promotions and who's to say he won't find the back of the net in the Premier League?
