Guy Branston would relish a return to Torquay after his recent exit from Bradford City.
The 33-year-old, who left the Gulls to join the Bantams last summer, agreed to leave Valley Parade by mutual consent on Monday.
The centre-half had a hugely successful spell at Plainmoor as he captained the Gulls to the League Two play-off final in 2010/11 and was named in the PFA divisional side.
"Torquay is a club that is really dear to my heart," he said. "I have done well there in the past and it is always good to be involved in such a lovely club like that.
"It would be amazing to work with Martin Ling and I like the idea of them progressing and bringing on young lads.
"The play-offs were such a vastly disappointing thing and I would love to go back and take them back up."
