Shamelessly stolen Skysports ‘transfer centre – live’ tag to start a summer long new thread for us for ALL signings and departures. I’ll kick it off with Loris Karius who has just completed his move from Mainz. Interesting that he’s been given the number ONE jersey. Hmm. Also, according to UEFA regulations, each club has to fulfill a ‘tattoo quota’ and with the imminent departure of Skrtel we needed to sign someone to help address that anticipatory issue and Karius will immediately be contributing to the team cause in that area. Good lad!
May 24, 2016 at 5:32 pm #1032792Rob I wouldn’t read anything into his shirt number. Brad Jones was number 1 as well, and was 2nd choice. Although,to be fair,i highly doubt he’d sign to sit on the bench, and surely he can’t be worse than Flappy Simon,so it’ll be interesting to see who plays in goal on the opening day
May 24, 2016 at 5:47 pm #1032813This could well be the best player we’ve signed since Sturridge. In my humble opinion.
May 24, 2016 at 6:03 pm #1032822ST, I’m not doing but I’m old fashioned and the number one jersey should always be starting keeper in my old school world!
May 24, 2016 at 6:04 pm #1032825On a non Liverpool but still a signing note, good luck Pako!
May 24, 2016 at 6:11 pm #1032831Rob,fair comment mate, makes sense. Maybe Karius will be our starting keeper. I think that will be the likeliest scenario
May 24, 2016 at 6:16 pm #1032834I read somewhere that hes going to play in the olympics and so will miss the start of the premier league season
May 24, 2016 at 6:17 pm #1032840Been Reading that Klopp is looking to sign Steve Mandanda from Marseille with both Mignolet and Bogdan being let go.
May 24, 2016 at 6:18 pm #1032843Number one meaning number one leader on the team and although Migs seems to communicate consistently throughout the game but we need a LEADER not just a talker and I do not see him anywhere near a leader and this has to start at the most important position on the team – the keeper. It’s what has led us to eighth and capitulations in two finals, lack of leadership and winners. The culling has to be merciless if we are to ever think of competing for the top four.
May 24, 2016 at 6:21 pm #1032846Looks like migs will play in goal on opening day after all. And the first few weeks of the season
May 24, 2016 at 6:26 pm #1032855Redsforever That’s just typical of our luck. Mandanda would be a good signing Taxi. Good experienced goalie. Migs and Bogdan can both do one in my opinion
May 24, 2016 at 6:27 pm #1032861I agree that, as supporters, we need to show positivity about any new signing; but with the greatest of respect, who on here really knows much about this keeper? Apart, of course, from the 3-4 minute montage that’s readily available on the youtube?
It really isn’t difficult to create a compilation of good saves over 2 seasons for any professional keeper. What would actually be more critically informative is a compilation of all of the goals that he conceded. If you want to play Devil’s Advocate, you could say that he has a tendency to push the ball back into dangerous areas – but these are the ones that he gets away with.
Anyway, I’m sure that he’s an upgrade on Bogdan – and probably Ward – but will be interesting to see whether he is in Klopp’s plans to replace Mignolet, but I have an inkling that Mignolet will still start the season with the gloves.
May 24, 2016 at 6:30 pm #1032870To be honest S/T I’m not keen on French Keepers with the Exception of Lloris,Mandanda looks like another Keeper who is a Good Shot Stopper and Not much else.
May 24, 2016 at 6:31 pm #1032879SUarezsteth i also read that coutinho n firmino might also miss the first 3 weeks of the epl because of the olympics. Brazil is host nation so u can bet they would want to put out a strong team .
May 24, 2016 at 6:44 pm #1032897We’ll see how he gets on, very much agree red herring about looking at weaknesses first – I’ve tried to watch as many vids as I can of him, with a particular interest on crosses, but can find very little. He does seem to like to punch first but does look more agile than Mignolet. Either way I think Mignolet will be gradually phased out.
Next priority for me is centre back, what with the Sakho debacle, and I’m still to be convinced about Lovren. Anyone know much about Ezequiel Garay? Both Man Utd & Chelsea have tried to get him at various points over the last few years, Chelsea failing to get him as an alternative to Stones last summer. He’s 29, but surely has as few years decent service to offer, and could be a useful player to fill a gap until we find a younger replacement or Gomez develops.
May 24, 2016 at 7:17 pm #1032948For those wondering how he is with crosses:
Karius made 81 successful claims in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, completing 99 percent of his attempted catches, compared to Simon Mignolet‘s 74 claims, or 82 percent of his attempts.
This season, Karius averaged 2.1 saves per goal, compared to Mignolet’s 1.27 saves per goal.Stats from http://www.thisisanfield.com/2016/05/loris-karius-scouting-german-goalkeeper-set-join-liverpool/
May 24, 2016 at 7:43 pm #1032990Pushes most of his saves straight out in that montage. That would be concerning.
May 24, 2016 at 11:08 pm #1033311Picture of Karius with Justin Beiber, with “chilling with the homie” written underneath. Just surreal:
May 24, 2016 at 11:33 pm #1033350Loris Karius…….Something Spurs Fans have been saying for a Few Seasons Now 🙂
May 25, 2016 at 8:04 am #1033454Quite clear Karius is going to be our No. 1 goalkeeprr, after all he was voted the 2nd best goalkeeper in Bundesliga by his fellow players, behind Neuer, so he is not coming to Liverpool to sit on the bench.
Also last season he committed no errors that led to gaols, while Mignolet made 4.
On another note, he and Danny Ward were born on exactly the same day in the same year!!!
