Taylor eyes Walsall history

The left-back wants the Saddlers to emerge from the shadow of their Midlands rivals after they reached Wembley for the first time in their 127-year history.

A 2-0 aggregate win over Preston in the Northern Area final on Tuesday sent them through and they will face Bristol City or Gillingham – who play in the Southern Area final on Thursday – in March.

“It’s a terrific achievement. We are looking for the next step now, we want our names in the history books,” he said. “It’s brilliant for the club, in the area it does get overshadowed a bit by the other clubs but hopefully we’ve done our little bit to get it in the limelight.”

Dean Smith’s side won 2-0 at Deepdale before Tuesday’s 0-0 draw in front of 10,038 at the Banks’s Stadium.

But despite their historic achievement, Taylor vowed the Saddlers will not dwell on the occasion.

“We’re not going for a party, we want to win,” said the left-back. “There aren’t many opportunities in your career you get to win a trophy and we have got a great opportunity now.

“If we play like we did on Tuesday we have a chance. We’re going to enjoy it and we’re going to try to win.

“It’s not often you get to go to Wembley as a player and the fact we’ve achieved it is brilliant. We have to look forward to the day and when it comes we have to enjoy it.”

And Taylor does not mind who the Saddlers face on March 22, with Bristol City holding a 4-2 lead over Gillingham from their first leg.

“I couldn’t care less, on our day I fancy us against anyone. We’re going to go there, will give it our best and look to win,” he added.
