De Girolamo heads to Sixfields

De Girolamo, 19, returned for a second spell at York last month having spent three months on loan with the Minstermen from October.

The Italy Under-20 international was expected to play a key role for Russ Wilcox’s relegation battlers after recently recovering from a bout of food poisoning, but Wilcox understands the forward will now spend the rest of the season at Sixfields instead.

“Sheffield United have called him back and sent him out to Northampton instead,” Wilcox told York Press.

“That’s the information I have received and there’s not a lot we can do from our side.

“I don’t really know what’s happened. It’s disappointing for us but a situation that’s out of our control.

“The agreement was there to keep him until the end of the season but, with youth loans, that can be broken.”

De Girolamo progressed through Sheffield United’s academy and made his league debut for the club as a 17-year-old in February 2013.

He has featured on nine occasions for the Blades’ first team, while he scored four goals in eight appearances for York in his first loan stint and was involved in another four games in his latest spell.

Meanwhile, the Minstermen have recalled Dave Winfield from his loan spell with League Two rivals AFC Wimbledon.

The 26-year-old defender only extended his stay at Kingsmeadow on Monday, but his parent club have now exercised their right to bring him back.

Wilcox opted to recall Winfield after Stephane Zubar joined his side’s injury list during the 1-0 home defeat by Bury on Tuesday.

Winfield made seven appearances during his stint with the Dons.
