i predict we will finish 2nd this season. Liverpool are starting to tire, klopps philosophy just wont work in this league. You cant play 100mph every game. Thats almost childish like tactics from him! lol

I’m not commenting on Liverpool but isn’t the point for having large squads, strength in depth and squad rotation in order to be able to play 100 mph every game.

Liverpool don’t have any European distractions and an early FA Cup exit could help them when other teams start to tire.

    Its a good point re: squad depth. The last couple of rounds of games I’ve noticed that the subs bench from all of our rivals are actually really shit. Let’s see if I can find out and have a quick look at each of our main rivals;

Chelsea Subs Bench – Zouma, Ivanovic, Chalobah, Loftus-Cheek, Matic and Batshuayi.
Liverpool Subs Bench – Manquillo, Embelton, Honeyman, Khazri, Ledger, Maja.
City Subs Bench – Stones, Zabaletta, Serrano, Silva, Nolito, Aguero.
Arsenal Subs Bench – Holding, Paulista, Adelaide, Maitland-Niles, Ox, Perez.
Spurs Subs Bench – Davies, Carter-Vickers, Winks, Dembele, Sissoko, Janssen.

It’s bizarre isn’t it? Look at Liverpool’s subs bench. Who? That was against Sunderland. When Mane goes to the ACON they’re really short of players. Chelsea are anoter team relying on no injuries to a couple of key men, otherwise they’ll be in trouble. Arsenal, again it’s a very inexperienced and low-quality subs bench that they’ve got. Spurs are in good form now but, again, they don’t really have the back up if they get a couple of injuries. City’s bench is a bit deceiving there because they’re playing Toure and also Aguero was on he bench. But they look all over the place to me and the comments coming from Pep are really bizarre.
We’ve got game-changers on the bench. Mata and Rashford came on and completely changed the game at West Ham. We regularly have the likes of Martial and Miki who can come on and influence a game. In that respect I think we are well placed to go on and have a really good second half of the season. And, a stated above, I am expecting teams like Liverpool to run out of steam/get some injuries etc. At the moment Chelsea are just out of our reach but, if we keep playing the way we are and winning, 2nd place is very achievable.
It’s gonna be interesting whatever happens!

2nd place is definitely a possibility however the other clubs above us keep grinding out wins just like us so it’s going to come down to direct encounters or a club or two having a meltdown at some stage.

I’d like to feel as positive as the rest of the posters however I still see glaring issues with our current team (severely lacking in the width departments) which has cost us points this season so I’m hoping Mourinho will very quickly rectify that. On the other hand, other clubs will continue to grind out points despite having what we United fans to perceive as weaker squads – if everyone stays fit then these clubs won’t have any issues.

Chelsea’s bench looks well set to defend a 1-0 lead Happyhurling! Wouldn’t think much of the options if they needed to pull something out of the bag.

Think them and the scousers will have a bit more pep in their step than the rest of us though without the European distractions.

Just wanted to comment on HappyHurling’s post about subs…

Can’t comment on other teams as I don’t really follow other teams that closely, but with regards to the Spuds bench, do remember in our last game we had 3 first teamers out injured/banned, so the “subs” were in fact playing in the first team, so the bench was filled with subs-subs if you get my drift…

Anyway, 2nd place is up for grabs…may the best team win…

Also Banjo, he named Sunderlands bench as Liverpools. Make of that what you want.

I’m just happy that results are now matching performances. When we were drawing to Burnley and Stoke and Arsenal many of the pessimists on here were saying our squad was shit and Mourinho had a massive job on his hands, blah, blah, blah. I was one who said that results will come and they have. I was one who said our squad was better than City’s and was laughed at. Now the talk is how our bench is better than everyone else’s.

Some fans were adamant that it was no longer the manager at fault and that the players are not good enough. I could never agree with that and I am glad that the players are now showing how good they are when played correctly.

I’m not looking at a specific position just yet. We just need to keep this run going.

But we had Mata and Rashford before we bought Pogba and Ibra happy, but we weren’t doing very well. Since we’ve had Pogba and Ibra we’ve been a lot better. Coincidence? I think not. So, if we lose Pogba and Ibra we could be in trouble, right?

BJ – Yeah that pretty much backs up what I was saying. The other squads seem pretty thin to me. Whether it’s subs or the subs’ subs. Cheers.

Johnny Utah – Ha ha, good spot! Not sure how I got that wrong. Anyway, Liverpool’s bench may as well have been Sunderland’s with the unknown’s of Alex-Arnold, Ejaria and Stewart. Moreno, Lucas and Origi are hardly world beaters, so I think my point still stands.

Who cares about 2nd? If we don’t win it, and unfortunately we won’t, top four is all that matters. Personally, without reinforcements in January, which are looking more and more unlikely, I still think we’ll struggle to make top four. Hope I’m wrong but there you go.
